Summer in My Mind

Had a great time in Bealeton, VA Wednesday! The 4th graders brainstormed some truly fantastic ideas.

I think they definitely had summer on their mind as they wrote this one (their summer break starts today!)

I believe this was my last workshop for the 2010-11 school year. But we'll have more coming in September.

Rock on!

LYRICS::

SUMMER IN MY MIND

V1:
Summer vacation is a day in the waves
Swimming with the tide
I'm feeling so hot and so cold at the same time
These are the best days of our lives

CHORUS:
It's like having summer in your mind
I wish I had it up there all the time
Can't you feel that summer in your mind
I just gotta shout it out
2-3-4 Yay!!!

Baseball is my Disney World

Had a great time today with the kids in Mt. Pleasant, TN. They helped me test out a new 'video conferencing workshop' we're going to start offering this fall. They did some great work and helped us out a lot.

I love their metaphor:: Baseball is my Disney World!!

Hope you enjoy the song as much as we enjoyed making it!

LYRICS::

Baseball is my Disneyworld
It's how I get away

So when I hit the pitcher in the eye
And I gotta say the crowd was so surprised

Blabbermouth Dragon

Had an amazing time yesterday in Johnsville & Iberia, OH. Got to visit two schools in one day. Double the pleasure!! LOL

Then we did an evening workshop and the kids got to bring their parents out. That was super cool. Seeing parents working with their kids to brainstorm and get some ideas down on paper. I loved it!

And they wrote a fun song about a silly dragon. Hope you like it!

LYRICS:

THE BLABBERMOUTH DRAGON

V1
A blabbermouth dragon

He´s so annoying
He talks every hour

I lead him deep
into the woods
And give him an apple
He starts chomping
He´s not talking
I´m happy as a clam

Thanks to Target!!

Thanks to the Target Foundation for making my day in Seattle possible! What a whirlwind trip. I landed in Seattle at 10pm Monday night and my plane lifted off at 11p the next night for my trip home.

But everything went great. I was able to borrow a sound system from my friends 'Recess Monkey' up in Seattle. So after picking up the sound, I drove out to Port Orchard, WA for the day's gigs at Sunnyslope Elementary. And let me tell you, it was quite a day!

The teachers were all super cool and the kids were so enthusiastic. The volunteers I brought onstage were crazy wild (Thank you Corey & Arwen) and the shows were intense.

But the workshop (with the 4th grade) was beyond the creme de la creme. They blew it out the roof! Check it out. I think you'll agree. Ever wanted to be famous? Might want to hear this song first...

Click here to hear the song, 'I Feel Invaded!'

LYRICS::

I FEEL INVADED

Becoming Famous
Is like eating ice cream
You think it's sweet but the brain freeze hurts

I get so nervous
In those stagelights
There is nothing worse

CHORUS:
I feel Invaded
The Paparazzi creep inside (3 X's)

I am a picture
In a museum
Everybody wants to see

Every life it
holds a treasure
Fame is not the key

CHORUS:

Rochester, NY knows how to Write Like a Rock Star!!

What an amazing day yesterday in Rochester, NY. I got to work with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders in two workshops and they did some amazing work!

What a cool city Rochester is, right up on the banks of lake Ontario. It was bright, sunny, and freezing cold. But the theatre was warm and the kids were so energetic, there was fire in their eyes.

The younger group wanted to write about 'girls'. Now that's a tricky subject, because if you make the song too girly, boys won't want to listen. But if you even hint at saying anything critical of girls in the song, no girl will want to listen. If you want your song on the radio, it's gotta be something both boys and girls will listen to. Well, they managed to do it. They came up with a sweet metaphor:: 'Girls are a Constellation, they Twinkle in the sky'. What a great way to capture it all!

Then the older kids decided to write about 'Love' and came up with an interesting metaphor:: 'Love is a Day at the Beach'. But then they decided to make it a super sad song. Not an easy task, but they figured it out.

After both workshops, I did a concert for the whole school and that's where the energy was blown out door. They erupted into a frenzy of rock n' roll! 'Twas awesome to see...

Here are their songs. Hope you like 'em both!

LYRICS::

GIRLS ARE A CONSTELLATION
V1
Girls are a constellation
They twinkle in the sky
They surround the moon at night
At night

But during full eclipse
Their sparkle starts to die
And my heart it starts to cry
To Cry

CHORUS
I feel myself floating away
And I´m falling apart

Click here to hear the song, 'Love is a Day at the Beach!'

LYRICS::

LOVE IS A DAY AT THE BEACH
V1
Love is a day at the beach
Where my heart was broken
Our tears were pouring down like rain

My love was carried away
By those waves a crashing
And now she´s washed into the bay

CHORUS
Why did she have to go away

V2
I still remember on that day
We could see the sunset
She turned to me so she could say
I´m dumping you now

My heart I feel it ripped in two
As the sharks start munching
Their hunger feasting on my love

Unicorns are my Sunshine

Unicorns are my sunshine, but now I'm full of clouds. What a great group of kids I got to work with today in Mansfield, PA. The creative energy in that room was intense!

The concert assembly was completely packed with all the kids Rockin out! Then in the workshop, I got to work with the 4th graders and they had a whole slew of great ideas. Once they understood the concept of a metaphor and how to build one, they were off to the races. They piled the mixed metaphors onto this song and it worked!!

LYRICS::

V1
Unicorns are my sunshine
Some days are hard to find
I try finding that sunlight
But I´m falling into my mind
CHORUS
Sunlight used to fill me up with magic
But now I´m full of clouds
So I cry cry cry
Sunlight used to fill me up with magic
But now I´m full of clouds
So I cry as the tears rain down

You were my unicorn
But now you´re gone
I really must find you
Before the dawn is gone

The Purple Potty Monsters!

Had a great time in Batesville, In yesterday. Love that town!

I think it must've taken almost 25 minutes just to get all the kids into the gym for the show. 900 kids at one show, now that was Rockin'!!

Then the 3rd graders stuck around and we did a little writing workshop. The kids did great! They chose a tricky subject, after all, no one even knows what a Purple Potty Monster is, but they figured it out. These kids know how to Write Like a Rock Star!!

Click here to hear the song, 'The Purple Potty Monsters!'

LYRICS::

The Purple Potty Monsters
V1
THE Purple Potty Monsters are doing backflips as they swim around the tub
Scrub a dub
These monsters have no legs
So this is how they move
They´re going to the YMCA
Cause this is where they play

CHORUS
Seeing these monsters makes me feel like my house is burning down
Seeing these monsters makes me feel like I´m in flames

V2

So I try to help them
I reach down and pick them up
They feel a little bit gooey
But they´re in luck
Because I pick them up
And put them in a cup
And I just happen to be on my way
To the YMCA

Fishing is a Cloud in the Sky

Had a great time in Wausau, WI today! Thanks to all the parents who came out for tonight's workshop. It's great to see so many of you involved in the kids' education.

If you could have been there, I think you'd have been impressed by these kids. They were one of the youngest groups I've seen successfully manage this workshop. They not only wrote a song, but came up with some unique ideas.

I hope you enjoy... :)

Fishing is a cloud in the sky
It makes me feel so happy today
But when raining my life gets cold

The mountains are ice cream
They make me sing

Thanks to Target Foundation!!

Thanks to the Target Foundation for making this day at St. Peter's Catholic School and this song possible. Thanks!

Check out the metaphor, simile and alliteration stacked throughout this song. These kids had their motors running full bore!

This song is so creepy. To borrow a metaphor straight from the song, this tune is worse than a walking graveyard... For sure!

I can't wait to see what they write next (I just hope it's not as scary!). :)

Click here to hear the song, 'Bigfoot is Like a Ghost!'

LYRICS::

V1
Big Foot is like a ghost
He really creeps me out
Lurking around at night
He makes me want to shout

CHORUS
Worse than a walking graveyard
Don´t look him in the eye
He lives inside all my nightmares
He will haunt me till I die

V2
He loves to sleep all day
And stomp around aT night
You better watch yourself
He really loves to bite

Thanks to Target Foundation!!

Thanks to the Target Foundation for making this day at St. Peter's Catholic School and this song possible. Thanks!

Had the pleasure of working in Forest Lake, MN today. Those kids still have snow on the ground (in a few places)!! :)

The 3rd and 4th graders here at St. Peters Catholic School were simply awesome. They began writing a song about friends, but it quickly morphed into an exciting tale about their friend's mouse and his scary adventures.

Like a river running through a bookstore, they carried their ideas far and wide. I quite enjoyed the process and hope you do as well.

Click here to hear the song, 'My Friend has a Mouse!'

V1
My Friends are money
So happy to have
Them in my life
They are funny
Money

CHORUS
My friend has a mouse
Who eats honey and cheese
My friend has a mouse
And it´s in love with me
My friend has a mouse

V2
The wee little mouse
Blew a gaskit in my house
Mommy chased him out the door with a stick
Broomstick

V3
Now The mouse is
climbing up a tree
When he gets snatched by
Eagle
The Eagle takes him up
But the mouse bites his claw
He lands on top of a kite that breaks his fall
Breaks his fall
Breaks his fall (repeat)

CHORUS

Love is a Horror Movie

I must admit, this is quite a mature metaphor for elementary school children. Which makes me all the more blown away!!

Lapeer, I thoroughly enjoyed your school today. You guys have got the juice! Please, oh please keep writing. I can't wait to see more.

I think all you readers will agree these kids found an idea with great potential.

V1
Love is a horror movie
I feel so trapped inside the screen
It´s a horror movie
Your evil glare Makes me scream

CHORUS
Why can´t I wake up from this dream
Can´t I wake up from this dream
Can´t I wake up from this dream

V2
I think I´m gonna run away
And then I think I´m gonna hide
Love is a horror movie
And we wonder why you lied

Where the Sidewalk Ends

Today I had the honor of working with a group of 2nd graders in Jackson, MI. They worked so hard and came up with such a cool idea. They decided to write a song inspired by 'Where the Sidewalk Ends' by Shel Silverstein.

The song is creepy and glorious at the same time. As you listen, you'll hear some incredible imagery developed and this is a fantasy world I'd love to visit (If I was one of those in disguise, of course!).

Keep writing kids. You've got the juice!

Click here to hear the song, 'Where the Sidewalk Ends!'

LYRICS::

Where the Sidewalk Ends

V1
Where the Sidewalk Ends
Is where you fall
Be careful not to trip at all
Because the people down there will catch you
And make you work in their shops

CHORUS
Turn round the other way
Turn round the other way
Oh please oh please don´t stay
Turn round the other way

V2
So grab a ladder and your disguise
Let´s go down and get those guys
We´re gonna save all the people
So they cannot be hurt

My friends are Lamborghinis (what a metaphor!)

Thanks to the Target Foundation for sponsoring this amazing day in Holland, MI. I can't tell you how impressed I am with these kids. They immediately understood the concept of metaphor vs simile, then went on to build one of the most well developed mixed metaphors I've ever seen in a workshop.

Thanks to all the teachers and amazing administration in this school for making all this possible. I can't wait to see what you kids write next. Write Like a Rock Star!!

I apologize we weren't able to post this song for you yesterday as promised, but the internet wouldn't work at my hotel in Jackson, MI. But today, here I am in beautiful Flint, MI and the internet is working just fine. :)

If you're reading this, I hope you're as impressed with this song as I was.

Click here to hear the song, 'Why do They do This to Me!'

I thought my friends were Lamborghini´s
But they are always driving away
And then when they need new tires
That´s when they come back to play

Why do they do this to me
Why oh why do they do this

I can feel the sadness growing
Why don´t they stay away
I can feel the anger also
And that glare on my face

Wow! What a day!!

My goodness what an amazing day we had yesterday in my birthplace of Danville, IL. Rock got to come along and was super excited about it!!

With 1800 kids at the show, this is one of the largest shows we've done and man was there energy in that room!

But before the big show, I was able to meet with a few students personally. We did a writing workshop and they wrote a song. It was spectacular work. I was particularly impressed because the students were from several different schools and did not know each other. But they managed to overcome their shyness, worked together, and wrote a very nice piece.

I particularly enjoyed their metaphor and the sentiment. I could use a little bit of Florida right now for sure!

LYRICS::

Vacation in Florida

CHORUS
Is a Roller Coaster
The ocean spinning round and round
Vacation in Florida
Is a Roller Coaster
And I love those ocean sounds

V1
I feel so wild
When I jump into the ocean
My mind is spinning round and round

V2
And I should tell you
There´s a sad part to this story
My sister was abducted by Aliens

They take her up into the sky
As we all do wonder why
And then we see a sight in the air
It´s Superman just flying by

Superman while flying by
Opens up his laser eyes
Shoots that ship out of the sky
And catches my sister
(with a pie!)

That Monkey is Family

Wow! What an impressive school I had the pleasure of visiting this morning. It's hard to find a more enthusiastic student body. You should've seen them doing the wave!!

Then the 4th graders stopped by for a songwriting workshop. I can't recall the last time I worked with a group of 4th graders who had such a strong understanding of metaphor. They grasped the concept right away, then went on to identify several metaphors. Then they created their own!

Listen below to hear how they did it. I hope you enjoy. They are now working on the ending of the song (3rd verse). Kids, we anxiously await your ideas...

LYRICS::

That Monkey is Family

V1
Two footed, one eyed fuzzy whale
Is about to flip
Onto my mutant monkey
Why won´t that monkey move
He´s about to be crushed
And I wonder why
that whale´s so chunky

CHORUS
That monkey is family
Better than gold to me
That monkey is family
Yeah yeah… yeah yeah

V2
That monkey folds my clothes
And puts them away
And then he helps me with my homework
He makes me feel so good
When I´m all alone
If I lost him I would go berzerk

Had an amazing day in Greenwood Lake, NY today! This town is such a cool little lake town. The houses are cute, the restaurants quaint and the kids are beyond cool!!

I was really impressed with this school. The principal used to teach in Harlem, but still loves to smile. The kids creativity was astounding. They built a metaphor, added a simile and threw in tons of alliteration and several great rhymes as they put this song together.

Then the kids performed this song just a few hours ago for all the parents in the community. And the kids got a standing ovation!!!

I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed writing it!

Our World is a beautiful painting
The colors look like fireworks
Until all the robots take over
They are recycling Hotel clerks

CHORUS
Our World has wonderful waters
Our world has wonderful waters
Our world has wonderful waters
And they tried to take it all

The robots started out by trashing our town

We dig down deep into our bookbags and take our pencils out
And all of those pencils they saved us

I Want to Be Discovered Too!!

What a great idea for a song! This was my very first workshop with 2nd graders and I was so impressed. They did great!

They even learned to identify metaphors, similes and alliteration along the way.

Now I have a lucky night in a beach side resort near Cape Cod in Hull, MA. I have an ocean view room for only $50 per night!! Oh the perks of visiting the ocean when the beach is full of ice! :)

Rock n' Roll is my Recess

What an amazing day in Francesville, IN yesterday! I haven't seen that much energy at a concert in a long long time!

Then I got to work with a smaller group of kids in a workshop and they were fantastic! Check out their song. What a hook! They built a metaphor that includes alliteration. Two fantastic Rock Star Tools.

Then they continued the theme through 2 verses.

Students of Francesville, I can't wait to see what you guys do with the 3rd verse. Keep writing!

The Purple Makes us Happy

It's going to be very interesting to see what happens to this song in the re-writing process. There are so many amazing ideas here. The kids at Culver elementary and Monterey Elementary had some crazy awesome brainstorming going on.

I can't wait to see where they go with it. That chorus is simply stellar!

Good work guys!!

Girls Are Golden

Yesterday I had the pleasure of working with the 4th graders of J.R. Baker Elementary in Columbia, TN. They were beyond remarkable! I was especially impressed with their choice of subject. They made the decision to write about girls!

Then they not only wrote about girls, but made it a sweet song. This could definitely make a good country song. The boys looked into their hearts for inspiration and the girls used their imaginations to imagine what a boy might say. I was equally impressed with both feats.

Several children came up to me later in the day and showed me they had already started their own songs. Awesome!!

As these 4th graders know, Girls Are Golden. We hope you like the song too...

Football is a Roller Coaster

Had a fantastic time today with the kids and teachers at Joseph Brown Elementary. I haven't seen teachers dance like that in a long time!

And the kids were beyond enthused. Way way beyond enthused!

And in the workshop they came up with a fantastic metaphor, Football is a Roller Coaster. The teachers worked hard all day and I was impressed how many stayed for the professional development and the evening concert.

I guess singing and speaking for 4 hours a day can wear out the voice. When I got up this morning, it was a bit low. Like all the way down in the gravel, and it stayed that way for several hours, as you'll see when you listen to this recording.

Keep writing kids, Can't wait to see you Write Like a Rock Star!!

We are better when we're together

I am so impressed with Highland Park Elementary. The kids had this crazy energy that just flowed throughout the workshop. It was hard to keep them reigned in. They were practically bouncing off the walls with creativity.

During my concert the teachers really got into it too. Cool school!

Mt. Pleasant Rocks!!

Had a truly marvelous time today at Mt. Pleasant Elementary. The teachers were so welcoming and kind. I spent the whole day feeling I was among friends. I was particularly impressed with this school's music, art and computer programs. The extra-curriculars were top notch!

The kids were beyond hyper-excited!! And they worked hard on a new song that really impressed me.

They came up with an idea to write about Justin Bieber being stuck on the moon. Chased by martians, he was forced to sing for his life!

But I will stop boring you with the details. You can listen for yourself right here::

Click here to hear the song, 'Don't Eat me for Dinner!'

Justin Bieber goes to the moon
Don't think he'll be coming back soon
Cause now he's with the Martians
And he's singing a tune
About being chased by their giant spoons

And he says...
Don't eat me for dinner 3Xs
Cause I am made of hair spray
Don't eat me for dinner 2Xs
And I should tell you
That I did not bathe today

Here's a shout out to CCA!!

You guys are awesome!!

I am totally impressed with your writing skills. This song really could be something great! For your 2nd verse, in order to make the song work, I'm thinking if you can add something to the story that has a huge emotional impact, that will be the secret to making this work. People love a song that makes them cry (odd, but true!).

So what could you add to the story that would create an unexpected twist and also pack in some emotional impact? If you figure that out, you're on your way!

You also can turn a song into comedy or just pack it with rhymes or metaphors, or something to make it memorable.

Remember, the key is to keep the listener interested. I'd focus on the hometown problem issue. Can you come up with a new and unique way to tell people about the angst of being stuck in a hometown? It's a bit of a cliche motif in movies, so your goal is to come up with a unique angle on it.

Milking Chickens!

This was a terrific day. Thanks!!

Football Makes me Cry

Whoa! Two football songs in 1 week! But I figure that's cause I'm in Steelers Territory during playoff time... But both groups of kids had the wisdom to write a song about football without making it about any specific team. Smart move guys! Now any football fan can enjoy your songs, regardless of their favorite team's name.

So, now you can compare & contrast. Hope you enjoy them both!

Thanks to all the kids at Lyter Elementary for your hard work today.

FOOTBALL MAKES ME CRY::

CHORUS
Football makes me cry
Don´t know why
Football makes me cry
I can´t say why
Rivals fighting

V1
Where am I
I just ate a pie
The tension it leaves us dying

Why does it have to happen
My favorite football team is losing
To everyone else
It seems so wrong

V2
And then they won
It was so fun
To see my team a´ winnin´

We got to see it happen
My favorite football team is victorious
Isn´t it glorious

We Want to Win Today!!

As I sit in a historic hotel in Williamsport, PA, I'm thinking back to my time in St. Mary's this afternoon. I was truly impressed with their creativity!

Listen to the amazing alliteration they put into their chorus, and such a timely song with the playoffs well under way.

Good luck & may the best team win!

The Football is in the Air

We want a trophy to carry away
We want to win today
Hear them all cheer
Hear them all cheer

V2
Can you hear the silence
Tension in the air
Everybody shout it out
Show them that you care

Gummy Bears up in the Sky

Had a blast yesterday in Janesville, WI. The kids really pushed me to come up with some great melodies to accompany their clever lyrics.

I think you're gonna like this one!

Dynamite Blue up my Gummy Bears
Where did they go
Please beware watch out for your gummy bears
Before they all blow

Gummy Bears Gummy Bears
Up in the Sky
Please don't go... Please don't go...
Gummy Bears Gummy Bears
Please don't die
Please don't go... Please don't go...

Christmas is a Roller Coaster

Had a fantastic time in Newark, OH yesterday (yes! it's much prettier than the one in NJ :)).

You can tell these teachers really care about the kids, and the kids were whooping it up!! Thanks to all you parents who brought your kids out to last night's workshop. 'Twas fun!

Hope you all enjoy the song. See you again soon...

Happy Holidays!

Christmas is a Roller Coaster
Cause I fall right down the stairs
Running running way too fast
Too get to the presents

I landed on top of the tree
Then tripped over the cat
He broke all the ornaments
But I got blamed for that

Christmas is a Roller Coaster
Christmas is a Roller Coaster
Christmas is a Roller Coaster

Ummm...

After the 5th and 6th graders at Indian Trail Elementary finished writing about their teacher getting glued to a chair, the 3rd and 4th graders filed in. They too wanted to write a song.

They came up with the most original idea I think I've heard in a long time. They decided, almost unanimously, to write a song called 'Ummm'. And I was a bit stumped. Luckily, the kids had plenty of ideas and knew exactly what to do.

It turned out to be quite grand in the end. Hope you like it!

Click here to hear the song, 'Ummm...'

LYRICS::
CHORUS
It´s time for me to make some nonsense
Huh huh Ummm
Huh huh ummm
Huh huh ummm
V1
My teacher says it´s time to take a test
But I am not ready
I stare down at the page
And start to write these words
V2
I look down at the first question
And write down something random
Then I start to sing
And all my friends sing along
V3
And then I hear the teacher say these words
You go to the office
And when I get down there
The principal asks why did you do this

And all I can say is:
CHORUS

Teacher Got Super Glued to her Chair

Had a great time Friday at Indian Trail Elementary in Downers Grove, IL. Those kids know how to ROCK!!!!!

They also knew how to be funny. I almost laughed out loud when they asked if they could write about their teacher being super glued to her chair. The song turned out very well (as you can hear below!).

Then the principal, Mrs. Bruebach came in and listened as we recorded the song. You can tell she loves to make learning fun. She watched sagely as all the children filed out after the workshop, then she read through they lyrics and started laughing like crazy. Hope you like it as well.

CHORUS
Teacher got super glued to her chair
By those naughty children
Teacher got super glued to her chair
And she´s just stuck there
Teacher got super glued to her chair

V1:
ON this first day of April
Time for someone to get fooled
Guess what it was the teachers turn
So we snuck up to her stool

CHORUS
V2
I think it´s time for a party
And all my friends agree
Time to call the DJ
Because today we´re free

BRIDGE::
Now April Fools
Is my Christmas
And a better day

The rapping Chihuahua (alternate title: The Wrapping Chihuahua)

Morrison, IL knows how to Write Like a Rock Star, and I can prove it! Just check out this song the 4th grade wrote yesterday.

And thank you to all you parents who came out to see the kids perform their song with me last night. You also should know, you have one of the craziest principals I've ever met! And I mean crazy as in cool as in full of that wild energy that makes learning fun! Even if he has to kiss a few pigs along the way... :)

I hope to see many more poems from you kids! Can't wait!

Click here to hear the song, 'The Rapping Chihuahua'

LYRICS::
V1
The rapping Chihuahua
Got hit by a car
He was wrapping some presents
And writing some cards

Down at the bus stop he hears that noise
Hears a noise

See it flying thru the air
See it fly without a care
See it flying through the air
Oh no it´s just not fair

It´s an Usher rap song

He loses his bling bling
It falls to the ground
I use it to buy some ice cream
But here come the clowns
They steal my ice cream and I hear that noise
Hear a noise

Chocolate is my Jingle Bells

Seneca knows how to Write Like a Rock Star!! I saw so many parents at the evening workshop, and I could see the pride on their faces. The kids were devilishly clever and full of a wild energy. And I don't think I've ever seen so many teachers return for an evening activity. Kudos to you all!

The song turned out great. Pay special attention to the chorus. They came up with an amazing mixed metaphor!

I met so many amazing people in Seneca (and I saw your bridge being blown up on the evening news last night! Wow!! Please write and let me know who got to push the button!)

Keep writing! I see a great future for Seneca. ps - sorry I couldn't get this song posted yesterday. My hotel didn't have a good internet connection. :( But it's up now. :)

Chocolate makes my mouth water
Cause its so good
Melts in my mouth just like butter
Tastes better than wood
Better than wood

I sing it every day
Sing it every day

I love chocolate cake yeah
Cause it improves my mood
It's not just for birthdays yeah
It's my favorite food
My favorite food

Blah blah blah...

Wow! You kids in Chebanse Illinois did an amazing job today. Your chorus was tight and the verses are interesting. I love the metaphor of the Chocolate River running through your mind. Can't wait to see what you guys do with the 3rd verse.

Good luck!

Monkeys eating pizza
On a day made up of dreams
The jellybean flavored bacon
On top of my ice cream

This dream is a chocolate river
This dream is running through my mind
This dream is a chocolate river
And the sweetness is all mine
It's all mine

Now we ride the river
Right through candyland
Making our deposit
To that bank of sand.

Be wary of treating the election like a sporting event...

Judging from the posts on FB this morning, you´d think we just watched the SuperBowl. As I scan my friends´ comments, I don´t see voters. I see fans, celebrating victories and commiserating losses.

Be wary of treating election results like a sporting event. Blind allegiance to the Chicago Cubs is great. Go on, you can cheer your team no matter what they do. But politics is a different animal. As voters, it´s our duty to think critically about every candidate, not just the ´other side´.

When we applaud only one side and jeer the other, we are effectively deciding to support only one team. If we take on the mindset of only supporting one side, we cease to think critically about our own team. We no longer hold our team accountable. We support them through thick and thin. Because that´s what a good fan does.

It doesn´t sound so bad in theory, but these are not athletes we´re cheering and jeering. These are politicians. They wield enormous power. When politicians become confident they won´t be held accountable, that their constituents will cheer them through thick and thin, that is when terrible things begin to happen…

Better be Nice to the Turtles!!

Better Be Nice to the Turtles!

Had a great time at Clark Elementary last night (near Millersburg, OH). The kids brought their parents along and I was impressed with their efforts!

I wish we'd had more time with this song, because the idea of turtles that might eat your kids was pretty awesome. The song, obviously, isn't finished yet and I'm anxious to see if any of you kids back at Clark can do it.

What makes these turtles so dangerous? What kind of turtles are they? Where do they live? Are they turtles living nearby in a pond, or are they vicious pets?

Keep writing guys. You've proven you have what it takes to Write Like a Rock Star!

Haunted Houses are Scary

Haunted Houses are Scary!! Especially if you live in one!

Had a great time in Rockford, IL today. This school really had it together. The kids had amazing energy, but knew when to listen and the teachers obviously were lots of fun! Almost made me want to be as student again.

Hope to see you guys again soon. Nice work on your song. I can't wait to see verse #3. How scary can you make it???

Click here to hear the song, 'Haunted Houses are Scary'

HAUNTED HOUSES
Haunted Houses are Scary
Especially on Halloween
Monsters big and hairy
I know they´re there although hard to be seen

CHORUS
I hear those monsters scream
I know they must be mean
I hear those monsters scream
Even inside my dream

V2
They chase me all over
They chase me right into the closet last night
They grabbed my dog rover
Gave him to me and said "now take a bite!"

Barbie Zombie Land

What a day!! Stony Brook school knows how to rock!!

Thanks for bringing your parents out for the workshop. Had a great time working with them. I can't wait to see more ideas in the contest. Start writing now and keep writing everyday.

Parents, ask your kids how is songwriting just like basketball. Don't worry, they'll explain.

So the kids and parents wrote a cool song about Halloween, and a bunch of soccer playing barbie zombies! Hope you enjoy...

Barbie Zombies play soccer at the plant with Barnie watching
The wolfmoon is shining over the field where the pumpkins are squashing

It's almost Halloween
Get ready to scream
It's Almost Halloween
Or is this just a dream

The barbie Zombies want to have fun that's why they bought about a thousand coconuts
They score 5000 goals, and then throw candy corn, then the crowd goes nuts

Candy on Halloween

What a great time today! Halloween songs are perfect this time of year. I particularly like the way you juxtaposed the creepy Halloween motif with the bright and cheerful memories of candy, sugar & the wonderful taste.

Nice work guys! What are you going to write next?

Click here to hear the song, 'Candy on Halloween'

I like candy on Halloween
Cause I love the sticky taste
I like candy on Halloween
Sugar all over my face

Ghosts, goblins, witches give me twitches
Werewolves howl in the night
Grab that garlic, make a stake
Avoid the vampire's bite

(CHORUS)

Zombie Doctor

Had a great time with you yesterday guys! What amazing creativity there in Three Bridges, NJ!

Can't wait to see what you guys do with that second verse. I do have a question. Is this doctor you're singing about, is he really a zombie? Or is he a doctor trying to save the zombies? Or is 'Zombie Doctor' a metaphor describing a doctor who's neglectful and inept, a doctor so bad he might aw well be a zombie?

Keep working. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.

Your friend,
Thaddeus

(CHORUS)
Time to call the zombie doctor
The only one in town
Time to call the zombie doctor
The one who killed the clown

He saved us from the zombies with his metaphors
And his computer chips declaring war
It's time to go to battl with our fearless leaders

The Zombie Doctor!!

Making Cocoa in my Mind

You kids in Bristol Connecticut were amazing today!!

I loved your enthusiasm at the show. Thanks! You 4th graders were great brainstormers. This song is living proof! Your chorus is simply awesome!

Can't wait till next time.

Your friend,

Thaddeus

ps - Listeners, the 'Little Grenade' mentioned in the 1st line is a metaphor describing the writer's little sister. But since the song isn't finished, that hasn't been fleshed out yet. But you need to know the song is about a little sister, then it'll make more sense.

Click here to hear the song, 'Making Cocoa in My Mind'

MAKING COCOA IN MY MIND

I loved my little grenade
She was the bomb
Now she's gone

My heart went up in flames
That Christmas Day
She got hit by Santa's Sleigh

Now she's okay, she's making hot cocoa in my mind...

Vicious as an Alligator

Had a great time in WEntzville, MO yesterday (right outside St. Louis). You guys wrote a pretty awesome chorus. I love the simile and the metaphor you made. The song is way silly too! Makes me laugh.

Thanks for all the fun! Keep writing. Can't wait to hear more ideas. The 'Write Like a Rock Star' songwriting contest starts up Oct 4th. Start writing now so you can submit then.

THE LYRICS:

My turtle fell in acid
And then he bit my finger
I think he is a zombie
But he says he is a singer (good rhyme)

(CHORUS)
He's vicious as an alligator 3X's (notice the simile & the alliteration)
He's my Darth Vader (repeat) (great metaphor! and a solid rhyme too!)

I saw him singing at a concert
Down under the sea
He looked into the audience
And started to sing about me (another rhyme)

(CHORUS)

Halloween is Coming Alive

Wow! You kids in Oklahoma City were rockin' it yesterday!! Well, I guess technically it was Moore, OK, but you guys wrote a great song. You definitely built one of my favorite metaphors, 'Halloween is Coming Alive'.

Sorry I didn't get this up last night. Had to drive to Tulsa after leaving your school, picked up Rock (my dinosaur pal) at the airport, and got to the hotel about 12:30am, then had to be up and back on the road by 7:30a for another show.

But your song is awesome, and that 2nd verse is downright creepy! Did you notice how the vague similes and metaphors in the 2nd verse create a much creepier image than the more explicit plot you lay out in the 1st verse? Alfred Hitchcock was a master of horror movies, and he did it by letting your imagination do the work.

Never underestimate your audience's imagination! It's much more powerful than any word or phrase you can ever write. The less you give them, the more their imagination will run wild...

Can't wait to see what you do with the end!

I went ahead and typed out the lyrics below. I got several comments on Facebook that people appreciated being able to read the lyrics, especially since our 'recording studio' was not the most professional. :)

Click here to hear the song, 'Halloween is Coming Alive'

I'm in the park with my best friends
when the water tower explodes
With a noise as big as a bomb
As we look to the sky meteors fly

(CHORUS)
And we run run run for our lives
As we listen to everyone's cries
I see fire inside of your eyes
Halloween is coming alive
(repeat)

Like a wolfpack wandering upon us
Making more fear than a zombie's embrace
The ground is suddenly slimy
As I feel myself sucked toward the sky

(CHORUS)

I Want my Grandpa Back

Something special happened at Eastern Hamilton Elementary yesterday.

I've never worked with a group of kids who wrote such an emotionally powerful song. Many had tears in their eyes as we sang and recorded this (I was struggling not to choke up myself).

I don't usually type up the words, leaving the music to speak for itself. But the words are so powerful here I needed to be sure you didn't miss a single one.

I hope you enjoy. Please tell your friends.

My grandpa died
Fighting for us and our pride
Bullets Buried in his chest
Now close your eyes
And see those tanks passing by
He's my 9-11 Now in heaven

I want my Grandpa back
I want my Grandpa back
Wish I'd been there...
To stop the attack

Why'd it have to end
He was my friend
And I'm still crying in my bed
In that faraway land
My innocence left in the sand

I want my Grandpa back
I want my Grandpa back
Wish I'd been there...
To stop the attack

Justin Bieber was Attacked by Beavers!!

The kids today got pretty creative and I had a great time. Several of them were very adamant that Justin Bieber must be relentlessly bashed by this song, but other kids were big fans of Bieber and wanted him praised...

Not an easy line to walk, trying to keep them all happy. The best plan, perhaps, is for you kids to continue working and make two different songs, one vilifying Bieber and one exalting him. Then you can continue listening to whichever you prefer. But for now, you're gonna have to be satisfied with this hybrid. Regardless of your opinions regarding Bieber and his talent (or lack thereof), I hope you enjoy the silliness. I loved working with you all!
